I have lived in New Haven for over 30 years of my life. The City has changed dramatically. I find some of the best restaurants within the city. Some of my favorite places to visit as a local are Wooster Square (know for it's Italian heritage), the New Haven Green, The top of East Rock (where you can over look the entire City and see Long Island in the distance horizon. If you love art the Yale and British Art Museum are wonderful places to visit. Shoppes at Yale on Broadway has various places to visit and shop. New Haven is a very walk-able city as well. If your time permits, take an opportunity to walk around the buildings in an around Yale which showcase beautiful architecture.
